This week we are highlighting the many ways we can thank our amazing volunteers that make Scouting in our communities and schools possible. We can show our gratitude through a number of official Awards, but we can also say thank you through informal awards and small gestures, which can be just as meaningful.
Here are a few easy, thoughtful ideas to recognise your awesome volunteers:
1. Send a personal thank you note
A handwritten or thoughtfully worded email can go a long way. Let your volunteers and Scouters know what their efforts mean to you. If you include a few specific moments, it can make the message even more personal and valuable.
2. Treat them to lunch
Surprise your Scouter or Commissioner with a light lunch or coffee at a favourite local spot. It’s a great way to say thank you.
3. Offer mentorship opportunities
Recognition isn’t always about looking back — it can also be about helping volunteers grow. Offering mentorship and training opportunities shows you value their future just as much as their past efforts.
4. Volunteer of the month
Consider introducing a “Volunteer of the Month” spotlight in your Group or District. It’s a fun and regular way to keep appreciation going throughout the year.
5. End-of-year acknowledgements
Make a point of thanking every volunteer at the end of the year. Whether it’s during an annual meeting, or even via a special email, this acknowledgment fosters community spirit and reminds everyone that their work matters.
6. Thank You badge (pin)
Did you know there’s a special “Thank You badge (pin) available from the National Scout Shop? It’s an affordable yet meaningful token that volunteers can wear with pride. It might be small, but it carries a big message: You’re appreciated!
Gratitude doesn’t have to be grand to be heartfelt. Even the smallest acts of thanks can have a big impact!
