South Africa’s diversity is one of our greatest strengths, yet many communities continue to face challenges related to prejudice, misunderstanding and the acceptance of people whose experiences may differ from our own. In a world where division often receives more attention than unity, Scouting provides young people with opportunities to learn, connect and grow alongside people from different backgrounds.
The Diversity Awareness Badge is one way that SCOUTS South Africa helps members build empathy, challenge stereotypes and become champions of inclusion within their communities. The badge follows three themes ‘Discover’, ‘Connect’ and ‘Action’.

For Cubs, this means learning about different cultures, abilities and family experiences while developing respect for others and understanding that everyone has something unique to contribute.
Scouts are encouraged to explore topics such as cultural differences, racial stereotypes, gender identity and equality, religious beliefs, generational differences and the social pressures faced by minority groups. They then share their learning with others and help create greater awareness within their Troops and communities.
Rovers build on this foundation by examining the role diversity plays in creating stronger communities, exploring how inclusion helps solve problems and learning how Scouting can better meet the needs of diverse communities.
Adult volunteers are challenged to reflect on their own understanding, facilitate meaningful discussions and create learning opportunities that help young people build respect, empathy and understanding.
Importantly, the Diversity Awareness Badge moves beyond awareness alone. Through community engagement, discussions, service projects and real-world experiences, members are encouraged to put their learning into action.

These educational outcomes also reflect one of SCOUTS South Africa’s core principles, as included in the organization’s Constitution: every person deserves dignity, respect and the opportunity to belong. Our Movement welcomes people from all backgrounds and seeks to create environments where everyone feels valued, safe, and included regardless of culture, language, ethnicity, religion, gender, age, ability or life experience.
In a diverse country like South Africa, learning to listen, understand different perspectives and celebrate both our differences and our shared humanity is an essential life skill which enables our young people to build stronger, more inclusive communities.
