Throughout youth month, we have been highlighting the meaningful impact young people make when they are empowered to lead, serve and create positive change.
As we prepare for Mandela Day on 18 July, we invite every Scout Group, Den, Pack, Troop, Crew and Scouter across South Africa to continue that spirit of service by joining our national Mandela Day campaign “Putting Values into Action.”
Scouting is built on values. Through our Promise and Law, we learn to govern our behaviours, help other people, care for our communities, respect the environment and do our best to make the world a better place. Mandela Day gives us an opportunity to put those values into action.
We encourage all members to give at least 67 minutes of service during the month of July either by putting together “Jars of Hope” or through community service.
Community service
We know that creating Jars of Hope is not possible for everyone. So, we call on members to give 67 minutes supporting or helping a community member or local organisation. You could also opt to give 67 minutes cleaning up an area in the community that serves many people.
Jars of Hope
With people struggling to feed their families and the winter gearing up to be very cold we are calling on our Scout Groups to join the Jars of Hope initiative and try to make at least 67 warm meals or 17 Jars of Hope! If you follow the recipe below, one Jar of soup ingredients will provide a warm and nutritious meal for four people.
Here’s how it works:
* There are many different recipes. Please find an example below. When using a different recipe please keep potential food requirements / allergies in mind.
- Recycle your glass jars, yoghurt tubs, containers or Zip lock bags.

Nelson Mandela believed that everyone has the power to make a difference. Through service, Scouts continue that legacy every day. Let’s show our communities what happens when young people put their values into action.
