WC SiS Life Leaders literacy project, 2025
When you hear the word “Scouting” it is always pictured as campfires, hiking trails, and outdoor adventure – which is defintely true. But there’s another side to Scouting that sometimes goes unnoticed.
With World Book Day shining a spotlight on the importance of literacy, it’s the perfect time to highlight how Scouting supports young people not just in the outdoors, but in the classroom and beyond.
From Meerkats to Cubs and Scouts, reading is built into the programme in fun and meaningful ways through various Interest badges.
- Our youngest members explore phonics, stories, and simple books, building confidence through games and creativity. Find the Meerkat Interest Reading badge HERE.
- As they grow, Cubs begin reading a wider range of books, learning how language works, writing their own stories, and discovering how to use libraries and reference tools. Find the Cub Interest Scholar badge HERE.
- By the time they reach Scouts, they are reading independently, analysing books, writing reviews, and developing critical thinking skills that support their education and everyday lives. Find the Scout Interest Reader badge HERE.
Scouting encourages young people to read by showing them that reading isn’t just a school task, it’s a life skill that gets them ready for life.
