Scouting teaches young people to stand on their own feet

Message from Wayne du Plessis, Chief Executive Officer

Dear Scouting friends and volunteers,

As I reflect on this year and all that has happened, including meeting young people, volunteers, and community leaders, I’m reminded of something simple: Scouting is not just a programme. It is a place where young South Africans learn to stand on their own feet while realising, they are also part of something bigger.

We are living in a time when many of the traditional support structures for children and teens are under pressure. Families are stretched. Schools are overwhelmed. Communities are navigating real social and economic challenges. And amid that, young people still need spaces that build confidence, resilience, leadership, empathy, and practical life skills. That’s exactly what Scouting does, consistently, and across every corner of the country.

Every week, tens of thousands of young people put on a uniform, make a Promise to do their best, and step into an environment where effort is recognised, character is shaped, and service to others is celebrated. They learn to lead, to solve problems, to work in teams, to respect differences, and to take responsibility for themselves and the world around them.

In a country that needs ethical, capable, and compassionate leadership at every level, Scouting remains one of the few youth movements that delivers all three, and not through speeches, but through hands-on experiences and trusted relationships.

South Africa needs more young people who can navigate our complexity with courage, who can work with others toward common goals, and who believe they can make a meaningful contribution. That’s what we build. And that’s why Scouting is as relevant today as it has ever been.

Your commitment changes lives

None of this impact would be possible without our volunteers and staff. You give your time, energy, skills, and hearts, often quietly and without recognition, to create safe, inspiring spaces where young people can grow. Whether you are leading meetings after a long workday, mentoring a young person through challenges, supporting programmes behind the scenes, or holding the organisation together day by day, your commitment changes lives. You model the values we teach, you carry Scouting into communities across the country, and you remind our young people what service, integrity, and care truly look like. For that, and for all that you give, I am deeply grateful.

May you all enjoy a well deserved rest and have a blessed and joyous festive season with your loved-ones.

Yours in Scouting,
Wayne
