Scouting is not just an activity, it’s a lifestyle.

Sachin Daya was one of five Scouts who achieved their Springbok Award end 2021. KZN Youth Influencer Pia Ramcharitan reached out to Sachin and here he shares his Scouting story with us.

“The Surat Hindoo Scout Group has a very special place in my heart since I started my Scouting journey there at the age of 8. From the beginning, my journey in the Movement was influenced by my father who was also a Scout in the early 1980’s.

Over the last ten years, I have learnt numerous things and made many memories that will stay with me for a lifetime. The influence that Scouting has had over me has shaped me into the person I am today. I would say that Scouting is so imbedded in me, that I cannot remember a life without it!

Ever since starting, my main goal was to become a Springbok Scout – which I finally achieved in 2021. This was a long road which started in the December of 2019. Due to the Covid-19 pandemic, an extension of time was granted to me to fulfil my Springbok requirements.

The Springbok award is the highest award that can be achieved by a Scout. This has many requirements, namely planning a two-night camp, completing a two-night expedition and as well as holding a banquet for twenty people. These events took endless hours of planning and help from our Troop Scouter, Reesha Kara and the Scout Group Leader (SGL), Ajay Daya. Without the help provided by them, my friends, and my family – none of this would have been possible.

Through completing my Springbok requirements, I learnt invaluable lessons about leadership, planning and communication skills. These can be applied later in life and aid me in overcoming difficulties and challenges I may face.

Whilst I have attained my Springbok, I plan on continuing my Scouting career by becoming a Rover. The quote I try to live by and hope to achieve is to “Leave the world a little better than how [I] found it,” as said by the founder of Scouting, Sir Robert Baden-Powel.”
